Since you want to build muscles as well, protein and carbohydrates are very important in attaining optimum results.  These are the primary sources of energy needed to help the body burn the calories you are supposed to be stuffing yourself with.  Besides, protein is the building block of the muscle tissues.  More muscle tissues mean bigger muscles.

It is impossible to build weight and muscle without exercising.  Unlike cardiovascular exercises used to build endurance and lose fat, bodybuilding exercises can be done at a shorter period of time.  With the proper diet as mentioned above, it is easier and much faster to build body mass than to lose body fat.  What you need to do is to stress or challenge your muscles through weight lifting.  As you lift heavy weights, you tear your muscle.  Muscles become bigger and stronger after they heal.
