Hello-

If you want to lose 20 pounds in the 6 months or in the next year, you will have a better chance of success if you do not go on a diet.

Sure, you can go on a diet and lose a few pounds here and there but then once you grow tired of your diet and restricting which foods you can and cannot eat, you will go off the diet and the weight will come back.

Losing weight and keeping it off takes time, effort and commitment.  You can get skinnier without the hunger pangs most dieters encounter.

I don’t know about you but I love food.  I cannot imagine cutting out my favorite foods for the rest of my life because my ‘diet’ says I cannot have them.

I’d rather die 5-10 pounds heavier if it means I can enjoy some of the fine delicacies of the world than cutting them all out from my diet.

That’s not something I should be writing on a weight loss blog but so be it.

If you want to lose 20 pounds, you can do other things besides dieting to get the weight off.

The biggest thing would be adding exercise to your life.

It’s probably also the hardest thing to do.

We are all creatures of habit and if we are not in the habit of exercising, starting an exercise program is going to be extremely hard.

It’s just like quiting smoking, usually you need help to do it.

Enlist the help of a friend of group of friends to start working out regularly.

Join a health club together, make a weight loss bet with each other, something to keep each other motivated to stick to working out.

Dieting to lose 20 pounds is almost guaranteed long term failure so I would advise against it.

If all you want is a short term solution - such as to get slim before a big event, wedding, reunion, dance, etc. then you can diet for the short term.  You can restrict your calorie intake to 1200-1800 calories and drop pounds fast.

You probably don’t want to add exercise to this type of diet because you’ll be burning much more calories than you need to and your body needs a minimum amount of calories each day just to keep your body functioning properly.  Consuming 1200-1800 calories a day is the minimum you want to be consuming.
