Although ab workouts might seem like the worst possible thing that you could be doing in your precious free time, there is truly no better way for you to get into shape and stay healthy. And whether or not exercise is your thing, there’s no shortage of ab exercise machines in the sport shops so you can still get your ab workouts that way.

Whatever you finallly decide to go for, a proper ab workout will always be one of the most effective ways of getting some of those well defined abs that you see on the cover of fitness magazines. Although you do need to remember the following. If you are just starting out doing an ab workout, you might want to first get a few things in place beforehand, such as having a routine physical exam carried out.

This is a good precautionary measure to take since doing an ab workout is a strenuous business at best, and you never know whether your present of state of health is geared to handle such a strenuous workout to begin with. And even if you are healthy individual that can cope with hard exercise, you might want to consider starting easy and working up to more strenuous routines as you adjust to the ab workouts.

Also, don’t forget that ab workouts aren’t really an exercise you need to be doing seven days a week. Just three days a week is fine, every other day so that you are giving your body time to recuperate. And for those of you who are just shouting at me that there are seven days in a week and not six, well, why not take the weekend as a time to relax and catch up on the other things you have going for you.

Even so, if you’re after really well defined abs or even just a flatter tummy, there’s no avoiding the fact that you’ll need a healthy diet to go along with your ab workouts. There is absolutely no use in sweating your way through an ab workout only to go and eat foods which are bad for you and which will undo all the work you have just put in!

Yes, ab workouts are the way to go, but don’t forget that you need to pay attention to your current level of fitness and diet before you’ll see the best return on your efforts.

You need to start out slowly until your tolerance level is there. A work out does not necessarily have to strenuous to be effective. The old adage “no pain no gain” is simply not true, in fact it is quite the opposite. It is however, very normal for people who seldom exercise to experience some slight discomfort after beginning a work out program, but these symptoms should go away after the body becomes more accustomed to being active.

Regular aerobic activity should put the heart in the cardio target zone, which is computed by subtracting age from 220. This number of then multiplied by 85%, the result being the maximum rate at which the heart should beating during aerobic activity. Beginners should  only work out at 70-75% their target heart rate until their bodies become more accustomed to higher aerobic activity levels. It’s good to start out slow and gradually increase aerobic activity as tolerated, maybe with just a walk around the block. Any bit of aerobic activity is still better than nothing at all, so move your butt! No excuses to begin with!
