Peptic Ulcer

PUD, otherwise known as Peptic Ulcer Disease, strikes millions of people in America each year. The antacid sales can attest to the fact that at some point most adults have a problem with their gastrointestinal tract. For some it may be indigestion, but for others it can be a sign of something far more serious. You may laugh at the movies where someone keels over from an ulcer, but in reality this can happen. You can become very sick and without the right medications and information you may not recover at all. It pays to have the facts in this case.

PUD of the stomach is called a gastric ulcer. One in the throat is an esophageal ulcer. If the PUD is located in the duodenum, then it is a duodenal ulcer. A PUD in the Meckle’s Diverticulum, which is a small enlarged bulge in the small intestine and is present at birth, is basically an intestinal ulcer. You can find ulcers all over the body. Some people with diabetes will develop a leg ulcer sometime during their life. Very few ulcers are a stomach ulcer, but those that are malignant tumors in 4% of cases, must be diagnosed with a biopsy.

There are different methods in which Peptic Ulcer Disease is treated. If the mucous on the surface of the inner lining of the gastrointestinal tract has not formed a full sore, then you may be able to help it heal by the use of antacids. If it has and there is H pylori infection present, then you will need an antibiotic to clear the infection. The doctor will also prescribe medicines to help heal the ulcer and reduce the stomach acid. There will be food items that you will need to avoid for awhile. Spicy food in particular can cause stomach acids to rise.

You may never get rid of your Peptic ulcer, but at least you can have a semi-normal life and get out and live some. If you take your medications and go in for regular checkups, then hopefully your ulcer will heal. One final note: stress can exacerbate an ulcer too. You may want to consider finding some stress relief methods such as meditation or aromatherapy to help you learn to relax. A therapist may be able to talk with you about your stress and find reasonable ways to help lower your stress level or at least make it manageable.

Classifiying and Treating H Pylori

duodenal ulcer

Do you know how organisms are classified? Every plant, animal and even bacteria have their own special classifications, but follow a certain formula for identifying the differences among similar organisms. Take for example the bacterium Helicobacter pylori. The more you know about H pylori the better you will be able to understand how this tiny unicellular organism works and where it is located. You will also need to know why it is so important to your health and how it is treated.

Everything in the animal kingdom, the plant world and the bacterium world is classified using methods. It begins with Kingdom and ends with Species. Here is the scientific family and classification for Helicobacter pylori: Kingdom (Bacteria), Phylum (Proteobacteria), Class (Epsilon Proteobacteria), Order (Campylobacterales), Genus (Helicobacter) and Species (Helicobacter pylori). That is quite a mouthful. You probably will never be tested on that so do not worry overly about remembering the details. What you should pay attention to is that it is a bacterium.

Helicobacter pylori are nothing to sneeze at even though it is microscopic. You cannot see these unicellular organisms with the naked eye, but they can most certainly make you very ill. An H pylori ulcer cannot be treated as if it were a normal stomach ulcer or a duodenal ulcer. These organisms are tough. They are the only organisms that can withstand the acidic environment of the stomach. However, there are ways to rid you of this nuisance.

H pylori infections are treated at the same time the ulcer is treated. The typical approach is a three part course of drugs. Of course there is the antibiotic for the actual pylori infection, but there are also two medicines that will heal the ulcer. These two medicines are clarithromycin and pantoprazole. When all three are taken together for a stomach ulcer or duodenal ulcer the results are very good and the patient will usually heal.
